Uber has introduced the United Kingdom’s first fleet of self-driving robotaxis, opening the service to customers in London this week. The company becomes the first to operate such a service in the country, marking a significant step for autonomous passenger transport in the capital.
The initial fleet is limited to 15 autonomous vehicles, each holding a licence to operate on London’s streets. Despite the self-driving capability, every car must carry a human safety driver who remains ready to take the wheel if anything goes wrong.
For now, fares for rides in the robotaxis match those of a standard UberX, Uber Electric, or Uber Comfort journey. Customers see the total cost upfront in the app before booking, with no premium added for the autonomous element of the ride.
BBC technology correspondent Zoe Kleinman was the first British journalist to flag down one of the self-driving Ubers in London and experience the service firsthand.
