Romania has been forced to suspend operations at its only nuclear power plant after extreme heat caused a major drop in the water level of the Danube River. The Cernavodă facility, which supplies approximately 20% of the country’s electricity, relies on river water for cooling and can no longer operate safely under the current conditions. According to an official statement, the plant is not expected to come back online for at least ten days. The shutdown comes while much of Europe experiences record high temperatures, putting strain on energy infrastructure and limiting water transport along one of the continent’s major rivers. Although no electricity shortages have been reported so far, the loss of a key generation unit increases pressure on Romania’s power grid during a period of heightened demand.
