Romania has halted operations at its only nuclear power station, the Cernavodă facility, after the Danube River fell to critically low levels amid a European heatwave that has pushed temperatures to record highs. The plant, which normally generates about 20 percent of the country’s electricity, relies on river water for cooling and could no longer operate safely, according to officials. The second of its two 706-megawatt reactors was disconnected from the national grid just before noon on Thursday; the first reactor had already been taken offline in July. Plant director Romeo Urjan told the AFP news agency that a restart is not expected within the next 10 days, marking only the second shutdown in the station’s history, the previous one occurring in 2003.
