The Oceania Football Confederation has thrown its support behind Fifa president Gianni Infantino, pushing back against demands from Uefa, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation that he resign. Following an executive committee meeting in Fiji on Wednesday, the regional body issued a statement on Friday praising the progress Fifa has made over the past decade.
The endorsement comes in the wake of a controversial World Cup sell-off plan that was abandoned earlier this month, which triggered calls for Infantino’s departure from several major confederations. While all 11 OFC votes could prove decisive in any future election, New Zealand has distanced itself from the regional group’s stance.
This development highlights the deepening rift within world football’s governing structures, with smaller national associations continuing to back Infantino even as powerful regional blocs demand change.
