At least 44 people have been confirmed dead after an overcrowded ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, according to police. The vessel overturned after being struck by waves on the world’s largest human-made lake, and an operation is currently under way to rescue dozens of people still missing.

The boat’s official capacity was 90 passengers, but it was carrying 114 adults, five crew members, and an unspecified number of children, the country’s civil protection unit said on Wednesday, citing ticket sales. Authorities have not yet released exact figures for how many people remain unaccounted for.
