Rockstar Games has at last presented the first official gameplay footage of Grand Theft Auto VI, putting an end to years of eager anticipation among fans. The reveal, broadcast under unusual circumstances, gave players their first proper glimpse of the next instalment in the legendary franchise, after mounting speculation and a series of leaks that had surfaced online earlier in the week.

The footage offered a sweeping look at the game’s world, highlighting a wide array of activities beyond driving and shooting, including lifting weights on the beach, playing pool and basketball, hunting, and kayaking. It also introduced the two main characters, Jason and Lucia, and appeared to depict a genuine romantic relationship between the playable pair — something commentators noted was a first for the series, which has rarely attempted such a dynamic before.

Reactions from critics observing the broadcast were largely enthusiastic yet measured. One writer recalled the classic television show Miami Vice, expressing a hope that the game would allow players to cruise down an endless highway in a vintage convertible while listening to Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” Another noted that while the driving and racing might evoke experiences from games like Forza Horizon, the richly detailed world and its many side activities remain a central part of the appeal.

The presentation came just days after a substantial leak of gameplay material, which Rockstar’s legal team has reportedly been working aggressively to scrub from the internet. Despite that setback, the official reveal still drew considerable attention, with the game set to launch on 19 November.

Observers also pointed out that many of the non-player characters surrounding Jason and Lucia appear to be quintessential satirical figures, underscoring the franchise’s longstanding tradition of parodying the excesses of American hyper-capitalism. The game’s setting, a stylised recreation of Miami, continues to serve as the vibrant backdrop for this fictional world.
