Xabi Alonso has singled out Cole Palmer as central to Chelsea’s ambitions following a 3-2 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage. The Spaniard, in his first Premier League match as Chelsea manager, watched the playmaker deliver a goal and an assist to seal the win.
Alonso said that for the team to function properly, Palmer must be at his best, praising the attacking midfielder’s ‘responsibility, maturity and freedom’ on the pitch. The coach added that his new squad is capable of achieving ‘special things’ this season.
Palmer’s decisive contribution came in a match that featured five goals, with the home side pushing Chelsea all the way in a closely contested London derby.
